Assessment PDF Print

A central part of knowing if you are making a difference to student learning and achievement is by collecting assessment information. Assessment is the process of gathering, analysing, interpreting and using information about students' progress and achievement to improve teaching and learning.

Assessment provides information to students about their learning and can be used by students to answer three important questions:

  • Where am I going?
  • How am I going?
  • Where to next?

Research shows that when students have this information they get better learning outcomes and better results.

Assessment information can be used across all levels of the education system as feedback. It is a way of working out what is going well and where further resources might be needed to improve results.

Assessment for learning
At the heart of a sound teaching and learning programme is the use of evidence of student learning and achievement.
Cognition Education is able to support schools in developing strategic plans for the use of student achievement data as a means of monitoring and measuring outcomes.

As well as working with schools to consider their needs for assessment information at a school level, we have a clear focus on the role of that information at classroom level.

We are able to support teachers to think about how they can use information about student learning to change their classroom practice to meet the needs of all learners.

e-asTTle (asTTle)
Cognition Education personnel have been key players in the development and rollout to schools of e-asTTle. Knowledge of e-asTTle is deeply embedded in the organisation and our support for e-asTTle is multi-faceted.  As well as providing in-depth support to schools in the best use of e-asTTle, we provide advice about the ongoing development and support of e-asTTle.

  • In-school e-asTTle consultancy support
  • e-asTTle workshops
  • e-asTTle development and support advice to the NZ Ministry of Education

Assessment and data literacy
We support schools to look at the data they are collecting to help frame the important questions through developing knowledge, skills and confidence in working with data.
