The Digital Technologies Guidelines (DTG) was a professional learning project aimed at senior secondary school (years 11-13) digital technology teachers. The project was one facet of a larger solution for addressing the shortage of skilled ICT employees in New Zealand and ensuring New Zealand can participate effectively in a fast-changing global environment. Facilitated by Cognition the DTG was first trialled as part of a foundation phase in 2007/2008 with a group of 13 pilot secondary schools around New Zealand and built up to 135 plus secondary schools in 2010.
The DTG project’s key goals include:
- supporting improved pedagogical practices in the area of digital technology
- developing clear links to the New Zealand Curriculum
- providing a common framework for teachers working in this area
- providing a platform for closer alignment with industry and tertiary providers
- focusing on developing and encouraging confident, connected, actively involved students through interesting, creative and exciting learning opportunities.
The key outcomes from the project were:
- Subject status
- Industry/tertiary interface
- Digital Technology curriculum developments
- Teacher capacity
- Strengthening regional networks
Feedback
The DTG project has provided a home for Digital Technology teachers and a clear future for the teaching of Digital Technologies in the NZC. We can now justify what we teach and confidently argue for a place in our schools. We can base our assessment criteria on the various levels within a learning area (technology), we can identify pathways into senior secondary school and beyond and provide exciting and challengin courses for our students. I believe we are far more united as digital technologies teachers.
